We believe that to live in South Georgia is to be truly lucky. After all, we have the best of several different worlds: sunny beaches, beautiful rivers and lakes, swamplands; we live in a diverse environment. We have known all along that our area is home to interesting wildlife, in addition to beautiful fauna. As students, we have recently learned of 3 species in particular that are not only interesting, but unique to our area: the Altamaha Arcmussel, the Altamaha Spinymussel, and the plant species Hairy Rattleweed.
These species are currently listed as endangered by www.iucnredlist.org. However, only the Hairy Rattleweed is listed as endangered on the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Endangered Species list. It is up to those of us who are aware of these species, and their declining populations, to spread the word.
We hope that you find the information on this site as interesting as we did. Please leave us a comment with suggestions for improvement, or ways that we can become involved in ensuring these species are around for generations to come.
